What is a sautoir?

The sautoir is a long chain necklace that falls at chest level or below. What we love about it is that it suits all body shapes. It accentuates the figure and enhances the neckline. With or without a medal, it can be worn on its own or with other necklaces in our collection.

The sautoir was very popular in the 1920s. They were worn for celebrations and parties. While the models of the 1920s were all pearls or decorated with multiple pendants, today you can find much more sober long necklaces, for example a chain with a medal, like a pendant necklace but in an extra-long version.

Nowadays, long necklaces can be worn with almost anything, from sophisticated outfits to everyday looks. It's perfect with a smart dress, but can also liven up a simple outfit, with a basic t-shirt for example.
This type of necklace looks great on bare skin (if you're wearing a plunging neckline), but it can also fall beautifully over fabric. In this case, prefer a plain, no-fuss top, as the necklace would otherwise get lost in the patterns or ruffles, or in the buttoning.

What type of top should I wear with a long necklace?

A long necklace can be worn with all shapes of collar and neckline. On a plunging V-neckline, it will sensually line the décolleté. It also works well with a round neckline, as do all types of necklace. On a boat neckline, the effect is very pleasing: between the straight collar (horizontal) and the sautoir, which is a long, thin necklace (vertical), you can play with shapes. Finally, around a turtleneck, the long necklace adds dynamism.

What size necklace should I choose?

Our long necklaces come in 3 lengths: 60, 70 or 80 cm, and this applies to both ready-made models and chains on their own. A tall woman is more likely to wear a very long necklace than a short one, but it's all a matter of taste: you can choose any size you like.

Good to know: long necklaces can be worn alone or in combination with other necklaces, such as a choker, a short necklace and/or a medium-length necklace (38 to 50 cm long). The size of your long necklace can be chosen according to this too.

Finally, a word of advice: to make sure your long necklace lasts the time you're not wearing it, store it safely in a jewellery box. Jewellery boxes often have a large drawer that's perfect for necklaces.
